Mandurah is identified as a dolphin stranding hotspot due to the vast areas of extremely shallow water in the Peel-Harvey Estuary and history of our dolphin population that have stranded.

Meet two of Mandurah’s resident dolphins – Nikki and John Edwards.  They are both easily recognisable with their distinct dorsal fins. 

Some of Mandurah’s dolphins have faint numbers on their fins.  Many years ago, freeze branding was the method used to help identify and keep track of the dolphins. 

When injured, dolphins have a remarkable ability to heal. They start regenerating tissue and blubber almost instantly to recover. Mandurah dolphins have been named and are identified by their unique dorsal fin characteristics, often caused from shark attacks and other injuries they have recovered from.
