Mandurah is home to thriving populations of both Australian Pelicans and Ospreys, thanks to its rich and diverse ecosystems. These birds are drawn here for the abundant food supply and suitable nesting habitats that the wetlands offer.

Pelicans

Australian Pelicans are a common sight in Mandurah, particularly on the sandbanks, Boundary Island and Samphire Cove, which we pass on our cruises. These large, graceful birds are attracted to the area due to the plentiful fish stocks found in the estuary’s waters. They are well adapted to our waters – pelicans scoop up fish in their large beaks (which can hold up to 13 litres) and then gulp the prey down. The estuary’s shallow, nutrient-rich environment supports a variety of fish species, making it an ideal feeding ground for pelicans. In addition to feeding, pelicans also use the sandy islands and coastal areas for resting and breeding. Their large, communal nesting sites provide protection from predators and human disturbances.

Ospreys

Ospreys, often referred to as sea hawks, are also prevalent here. These raptors thrive in coastal areas where fish are abundant, as fish make up nearly all of their diet. Our estuary and rivers make the perfect hunting grounds. The healthy fish population, coupled with tall trees and man-made structures such as poles and platforms, provides ideal nesting sites.  Ospreys are known to return to the same nesting sites each year, and Mandurah’s commitment to conservation ensures these birds have safe and secure places to raise their young. There are man made nests we pass on our cruise, near Boundary Island Brewery – designed to provide these beautiful birds a long-term home.
