Mandurah’s waterways are more than just a stunning backdrop, they’re home to a thriving community of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins. These remarkable animals are not only icons of our coastal identity, but also vital contributors to the health and balance of the estuary’s environment. With a growing population that researcher Dr. Krista Nicholson and local community groups are closely monitoring, we’re uncovering fascinating insights into their social dynamics, behaviours, and the pressures that affect them most.

The Population
Mandurah is widely celebrated as the dolphin capital of Western Australia, with 85 bottlenose dolphins calling the Peel–Harvey Estuary home, or 91 if we include the six adventurers who decided to holiday down in Bunbury. This estuarine population forms its own distinct community, separate from the coastal dolphins offshore, though the two groups do regularly interact.
What makes the Mandurah dolphins particularly fascinating is the stability of their population structure. Around 40% are adults, 30% juveniles, and 30% calves, a healthy distribution that indicates a thriving, self-sustaining community. The dolphins here are currently operating at full reproductive capacity, which is vital for long-term population resilience. Many local mothers are having calves back-to-back, welcoming a new calf as soon as the previous one has weaned, or in unfortunate situations, been lost. Calves typically wean at around three years old, though anywhere between two and four years is normal.
At birth, males and females are equally represented with a 1:1 ratio. As they grow, the population shifts to slightly more females in the juvenile stage, and by adulthood, the ratio becomes roughly 2:1 in favour of females, a balance that is gradually normalising over time. This reflects the “operational sex ratio”, meaning the number of females available to breed each season remains fairly steady, helping maintain reproductive momentum.
This reproductive strength is crucial for the estuary’s dolphin population. To stay stable, the community cannot afford to lose more than one adult female each year, and a steady stream of calves must survive to adulthood. With the right environmental conditions, protection efforts, and ongoing monitoring, Mandurah’s dolphins are well positioned to continue thriving for generations to come.

Importance to the ecosystem
Dolphins play a central role in the Peel–Harvey Estuary ecosystem, acting as the apex predators at the top of the food chain. These remarkable animals are heavily reliant on the estuary’s resources, feeding primarily on the fin fish that thrive in these sheltered waters. These dolphins remove more than 200,000 kilograms of fish from the estuary each year, a level of predation that is essential for maintaining ecological balance. By controlling fish populations, dolphins prevent any single species from dominating the estuary, which in turn supports the diversity of other marine life, including smaller fish, crustaceans, and even bird species that rely on a balanced food web.
As apex predators, dolphins also influence the behaviour and distribution of other species within the estuary. Fish alter their movements and schooling patterns in response to dolphin hunting, which has cascading effects throughout the ecosystem. This natural regulation helps maintain healthy populations, prevents overgrazing of important seagrass beds, and contributes to the overall productivity of the estuarine environment.
Beyond their direct ecological impact, the presence of a stable dolphin population is a strong indicator of the estuary’s health. Thriving dolphins suggest abundant fish stocks and good water quality, while changes in their numbers or behaviour can signal environmental stress or ecosystem imbalance. In this way, dolphins are not only charismatic symbols of Mandurah’s waterways but also key guardians of the estuary’s long-term ecological stability, playing a vital role in sustaining the health and resilience of the entire ecosystem.
Dr Krista Nicholson
Dr. Krista Nicholson of Murdoch University is at the heart of the Mandurah Dolphin Research Project, a long-term effort dedicated to understanding and protecting the estuary’s dolphin population. Over the years, Dr. Nicholson has uncovered fascinating insights into how these dolphins live, interact, and maintain their social groups. Her work goes beyond just counting numbers, it examines the very behaviours that shape the community and influence its survival.
Currently, her research focuses on some of the biggest threats to the dolphins, including strandings and entanglements. By studying how these incidents are affected by dolphin behaviour, environmental conditions, and human activity, she is learning how to reduce risks and keep the population healthy. This research is vital not only for science but also for conservation, helping the community understand what dolphins need to thrive and how human actions can make a real difference. Dr. Nicholson’s work is giving us a closer, more personal look at these remarkable animals and the challenges they face in their estuarine home.
Recognising the importance of this work, Mandurah Cruises has invested $50,000 into vital research focused on understanding Mandurah’s dolphins and the factors that impact them in the Peel–Harvey Estuary. In partnership with Dr. Krista Nicholson of Murdoch University and the Mandurah Dolphin Research Project, this support will extend critical fieldwork through to 2028. The funding will enhance early detection of live strandings and strengthen rapid response efforts, giving stranded dolphins a significantly better chance of survival.

Impacts on the dolphins
Mandurah’s dolphins face several challenges in their estuarine home, with strandings and entanglements posing the greatest threats to their wellbeing. By understanding the behaviours and environmental factors that contribute to strandings and entanglements, researchers and local volunteers can work together to protect the estuary’s dolphins and ensure these iconic animals continue to thrive in their natural habitat.
The Peel–Harvey Estuary is a shallow system with numerous channels, and most dolphins have experienced stranding at least once. When this happens, the animals can suffer significant pressure on their internal organs and are at risk of sunburn if left exposed for too long. Strandings are influenced by a mix of natural behaviours such as hunting or play, and environmental factors like tidal movements and water levels, making them complex and sometimes unpredictable events.
Entanglement is another major threat, particularly from recreational fishing lines. Globally, entanglement is one of the leading dangers to dolphins, as it can restrict movement, cause severe injuries, or even result in death. Because these risks can have lasting impacts on individual dolphins and the broader population, prevention is far more effective than intervention after the fact. Community awareness, responsible fishing practices, and proactive conservation measures are therefore essential to reducing these threats.

Programs such as the Dolphin Watch Project take this even further, teaching community members how to identify individual dolphins by their fin markings and behaviours. By engaging in citizen science, community members contribute directly to research and conservation, helping scientists track population trends and health.
As people become more familiar with the dolphins and their environment, they not only enjoy meaningful encounters but also develop a stronger sense of responsibility for protecting the estuary and its wildlife.
